Privacy Policy

The Civil War News archive is free to read. You don’t need an account, a password, or a subscription to open an issue or search the articles, and we never ask who you are to let you read. This page explains, in plain terms, what information does pass along when you visit and who handles it.

Who runs this site

civilwarnews.com is published by Historical Publications LLC of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina, the publisher of Civil War News in print. Questions about this policy go toinfo@historicalpublicationsllc.com.

What we don’t collect

• There are no registrations, logins, or reader accounts on this site.
• We take no payments here. Subscriptions, gift subscriptions, and back-issue orders are handled on SimpleCirc, a separate site with its own privacy policy.
• The site runs no visitor-tracking or analytics service — no Google Analytics, no advertising trackers.
• We don’t sell, rent, or trade information about our readers to anyone.

Hosting and security

The site is hosted on Cloudflare. As with any web host, Cloudflare receives your IP address and basic browser details with each page request so it can deliver the page and turn away automated abuse, such as programs trying to copy the whole archive. That information is used to run and protect the site, not to build a profile of you. SeeCloudflare’s privacy policy.

Banner advertisements

The banners on these pages come from ArtifactSearch.com, a service of Historical Publications LLC, not from an outside ad network. When a banner is shown or clicked, ArtifactSearch records which banner it was, that it appeared on Civil War News, the time, and your browser’s user-agent line (for example, “Chrome on a Mac”) so automated traffic can be screened out. Your IP address is checked only to limit rapid repeat requests and is not stored with the record. The ads set no cookies and build no advertising profile. Clicking a banner takes you to the advertiser’s own website, which has its own privacy practices.

Newsletter sign-up

Near the bottom of each page is an optional sign-up box for the Historical Publications newsletter. If you fill it in, your name and email address go to Constant Contact, the service that sends the newsletter, and are used only to send it. The form is protected by Google reCAPTCHA, which checks that a real person is signing up; Google’sprivacy policy applies to that check. Every newsletter carries an unsubscribe link, or you can ask us by email to remove you. We never share the list.

Email you send us

If you write to us — with a news tip, a question about an order, or a request to reprint an article — your address and message are used to answer you and for nothing else. They are not added to a mailing list.

Search, sharing, and outside links

Archive search. The search page works inside your own browser: it downloads pieces of the site’s search index from this site and matches your words on your device, so what you type is not sent to us or to any search company.

Share buttons. The Facebook, X, and Email buttons on articles are plain links. Nothing loads from Facebook or X, and nothing is sent to them unless you click one. Copy link simply places the page address on your clipboard.

Back issues. The list on the Order Back Issues page is loaded from historicalpublicationsllc.com, our publisher’s site. Ordering takes you to SimpleCirc.

Outside links. Links to Civil War News on Facebook, SimpleCirc, Civil War Events, our sister publications, and other sites take you off civilwarnews.com. Those sites follow their own privacy policies.

Cookies

The site’s own pages set no cookies. You may receive cookies from Constant Contact and Google reCAPTCHA, which power the newsletter box, and, if Cloudflare asks your browser to pass a quick security check, a short-lived Cloudflare cookie recording that you passed. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, and the articles will still read normally.

Children

Civil War News is written for historians, collectors, preservationists, and reenactors. The site is not directed to children under 13, and we don’t knowingly collect information from them.

Changes to this policy

If the site’s practices change, we will update this page and revise the date at the top.
