Atlanta Historian Receives Prestigious Award In Public History

ATLANTA, GA—The Atlanta Civil War Round Table is proud to announce that our former president and longtime member, Gordon Jones, has been awarded the Emerging Civil War’s Award for Service in Civil War Public History.

The Emerging Civil War is a public history-oriented platform for sharing original scholarship related to the American Civil War. Past recipients of the award include organizations like the American Battlefield Trust, and individuals such as Dr. Gary Gallager, prominent Civil War historian at the University of Virginia.

Gordon is a passionate ambassador of history. His work at the Atlanta History Center has transformed its Civil War exhibitions, elevating them to world-class standards. Through his leadership at the Atlanta Civil War Round Table, Gordon has connected our members with cutting-edge research and facilitated collaborations with foremost experts in the field.

What truly sets Gordon apart, however, is his exceptional ability to engage and educate. His talent lies in using artifacts—often rare and sometimes seemingly ordinary—to create a profound connection between the past and the present. His presentations blend humor and carefully selected objects to make history engaging and meaningful to all.

Gordon has inspired our group to move our meetings to the Atlanta History Center, where he often shares relics from their vast collection that tie directly into our discussions. We extend a warm invitation for all to join us on the first Monday of each month at the Atlanta History Center.
