Across the United States, July 4 is celebrated as the Independence Day, the day in 1776 that President John Hancock, president of the Continental Congress in Philadelphia, Penn., affixed his signature to the bottom of the document. Yet, according to John Adams of Massachusetts, July 2 should have been the day set aside to commemorate the decision to break from Great Britain. That was the day the Congress voted to pass the declaration written by Thomas Jefferson.
