Publisher’s note: In this issue we have printed the names of the 200 book titles selected by the late Richard Barksdale Harwell for his In Tall Cotton, which was reprinted by Broadfoot Publishing Company in 2006. Tom Broadfoot also published The Union Bookshelf: A Selected Civil War Bibliography, by Michael Mullins and Rowena Reed (1982). Mullins at the time was Book Review Editor of the Civil War Book Exchange, the forerunner of this very newspaper, CWN. Dr. Reed would serve a short stint as the first Book Review Editor for Blue & Gray Magazine. The authors chose 246 titles related to the North’s war efforts. For 114 of them, they wrote a descriptive annotation. To recognize The Union Bookshelf, we have chosen a dozen representative titles from this valuable bibliography. 1. Andrews, J. Cutler. The North Reports the Civil War. Pittsburgh: University of Pittsburgh Press, 1955. 2. Crane, Stephen. The Red Badge of Courage. New York: D. Appleton and Company, 1895. 3. John F. C. Fuller.
