Harwell’s 200

Book Review Editor’s note: in the March 2018 issue of our newspaper, we wrote of Richard Barksdale Harwell’s In Tall Cotton: The 200 Most Important Confederate Books for the Reader, Researcher and Collector (1978). In our article we referred to fifteen of them. For this November “Book Issue,” we list Harwell’s full selection of his 200. We have transcribed the titles exactly as Dr. Harwell presented them, without change (e.g., in his three entries for Ellis Merton Coulter, Harwell states his vital statistics as “1890-.” Dr. Coulter, longtime professor of history at the University of Georgia, passed away in 1981). As you peruse this list, you may note that fifteen authors are mentioned more than once. Two scholars are mentioned four times. Who are they? 1.
