RICHMOND, Va.—The 37th Annual Capital of the Confederacy Show, sponsored by the Central Virginia Civil War Collectors Association and Mike Kent & Associates, was held on Nov. 11-12, at the Richmond Raceway Complex and was another success story for Civil War collectors everywhere, according to Show Chairman Mike Kent. Although table reservations were slower coming in this year, the show ended up with 25 more exhibitor tables than last year, an unusual statistic in this economy. Even though the show was competing with a modern gun and knife show across town and the Richmond Marathon, attendance was good with several spectacular sales being reported by various dealers. Kent stated that he always looks at show results in Richmond – table sales, attendance, and dealer sales – to gauge the health of the Civil War industry, especially as it relates to his expectations for the upcoming Franklin, Tenn., and Dalton, Ga., shows. With the results from Richmond being better than expected and the Franklin show sold out several weeks early, Kent is anticipating one of the best Civil War show seasons we have had in several years. A special guest of honor was noted Civil War author Gordon Rhea, who was hosted by Jill Owens and Marc Ramsey of Owens and Ramsey Historical Booksellers. Rhea was there to sign his 5th and final book covering the complete Overland Campaign of 1864 entitled On to Petersburg (LSU Press). This was the second debut of his latest work and the only place to get a signed copy. For all Virginia Civil War buffs (and others who attend the show), mark your calendars for the 2018 Capital of the Confederacy Show which has moved a week later to Nov. 17-18, 2018. This was the original date for the show for many years and the show is reverting to that date to avoid traffic jams associated with the Richmond Marathon and allow several high profile vendors to return to Richmond after participating in the Tulsa show. While marking your calendar, don’t forget the Dalton Show on Feb. 3-4, 2018. Keep on collecting!
