Jan. 27, Pennsylvania. Speaking Series

The National Civil War Museum offers the first in its 2018 series of 12 free lectures to the public with “New Acquisitions and Seldom Seen Treasures of the Museum” with NCWM Curator Brett Kelley. This presentation will include a display of the NCWM’s newest donations and additions to the Museum collection. The 2018 Lessons in History program is open from 1-2 p.m. and is free to the public. Be here for the 32nd Annual Fort Taylor Civil War Heritage Days on Feb. 2-4, in Key West. This 3-day event portrays the time period of 1861-1862 at a Federal fortress. The National Civil War Museum will celebrate Black History Month on Feb. 10, as part of their annual community free day. Feb. 16-18, Florida. Reenactment

Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park will host the weekend long 42nd Annual Reenactment commemorating the 154th anniversary of the Battle of Olustee. More than 2000 living historians will give presentations of both civilian and military life during the Civil War. Events will include a wreath laying ceremony, Civil War Memorial Service, tours and medical demonstrations, entertainment, arts, crafts and food booths along with artillery night firing and old-fashioned barn dance. Spectators can visit authentic campsites, watch the parade, view artillery inspections, listen to a period music concert and watch the battle reenactment. Feb. 22-25, Mississippi. Reenactment

Mississippi Stands Civil War Re-enactment Battle of Brice’s Crossroads The 1st Division/Southern Reenactors Association is pleased to announce the following national event, Mississippi Stands Civil War Re-enactment. This is an event that will feature some of the vital Historic Battles for the control of Mississippi and border states. Battles will take place on nearly 2,000 acres of Historic Battlefield located at Brice’s Crossroads in Baldwyn. All re-enactors and organizations are invited to attend this historic event. There will be both campaign style battles along with spectator battles along with mainstream, campaign and civilian camps for everyone. For information; 662-680-4025.

Feb. 23-25, Florida. Reenactment

Battle of Ballast Point at Ft. Desoto hosted by the 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, in cooperation with Pinellas County Parks Dept. and Ft.

Desoto Park will host a Civil War weekend encampment and historic battle reenactment located at 3500 Pinellas Bayway S. St. Petersburg, FL 33715. Participants will include Union and Confederate infantry, artillery and civilian impressions. On Friday, camps will be open for tours by elementary school students from surrounding counties. Sat. and Sun. camps will be open to the public from 9 a.m. – 5 p.m with ongoing events each day. Battle reenactments at 2 p.m. on Sat. and 1 p.m. on Sun. Feb. 24, Maryland. Slavery and Catholic America in the 19th Century

“Catholicism was deeply entwined with slavery in the colonial Chesapeake and evolved with the changing nature of American society in the 19th century.” Professor Adam Rothman of Georgetown University traces the history of the Maryland Jesuit slave community, whose legacy is still felt today. The National Civil War continues its 2018 Lessons in History Speaking Series as NCWM CEO Wayne Motts presents “The Wounded Soon Began To Pour In…: The George Spangler Farm and the Union 11th Corps Hospital at Gettysburg.” Wayne Motts will take you back 155 years to the scene of Gettysburg’s best preserved and documented field hospital. His presentation will include unpublished, rare, and seldom scene material associated with the farm and its history. Sat., 1-2 p.m. Free to the public. Feb. 24-25, South Carolina. Reenactment

See history come alive with cannons, cavalry horses and living history experts. Over the weekend, reenactors eat, sleep, live and fight in a painfully recreated version of the war in 1865. This reenactment has grown from a few hundred men with muskets to a full-blown Civil War festival. In addition to the battles, there will be authentic 19th century military encampments, living history presentations, reproductions of medical facilities, signal service and civilian portrayals. The 15th Annual Civil War Preservation Ball in the rotunda of the Pennsylvania Capitol Building in Harrisburg, to support the Gettysburg Monuments Project Endowment Trust Fund will be held 7-10 p.m. This ball has raised over $98,000 for preservation. This event is open to all families seeking a day of fun, exploration, and learning. There will be hands-on activities for all ages. Join the Army and learn to drill, try dancing the Virginia Reel, enjoy 19th-century games and crafts, watch the Emmy-award winning film, Field of Lost Shoes, take a guided tour through the battlefield, learn 19th-century food ways and much more. April 6-8, Maryland. Symposium

Nineteenth Annual Lincoln Assassination Studies. Current researchers and authors in the field share thoughts on how a divided nation dealt with the death of Lincoln, how John Surratt interacted with female agents for the Confederacy, the ongoing stories of Dr. Mudd, the illegalities of the Conspiracy Trial, a CSI: Washington investigation of how the evidence was handled, and more. Shenandoah University’s McCormick Civil War Institute annual spring conference (8:30 a.m.- 4 p.m.) “Another Era in Our War Life”: When the Home Front Became the Battle Front. April 20-22, Florida. Living History

Located at Camp Milton Historic Preserve, 1175 Halsema Road North in Jacksonville and hosted by the city of Jacksonville – JAXParks. C.S. & U.S. Soldiers are needed to participate. Confederate soldiers will camp and defend the reconstructed earthworks, originally constructed in March of 1864. Federal soldiers will recreate the June 1864 attack on the works. Sat. skirmish at 2 p.m., Sun. skirmish at 1 p.m. The Preserve is located on the northern portion of the original battlefield. The civilian camp is located at the interpretive center, AKA “the barn.” Members of the Golden Teacup Society will portray the lives of civilians affected by the war in and around Jacksonville. May 4-6, Florida. Reenactment

The Federal Garrison of Fort Clinch in Fernandina Beach is sponsored by the Ft. Clinch State Park CSO. Union soldier, sailor and marine reenactors are needed for first person interpretation of Fort Clinch and the Army camps around Fernandina in May of 1864. Military activities will include guard duty, drill, firing demonstrations and mail call. Barracks accommodations will be available as well as period camping outside the fort. There are five beds available first come first serve in the hospital for females. Reenactors must be in proper uniform (kepi or forage cap, sack coat, trousers and brogans). May 5, Maryland. Program

Buffalo Soldiers: Mappers, Explorers, Park Rangers, and Protectors of the West. Trained and tested by the fires of the American Civil War, African American soldiers moved west to serve as our country expanded. Hardrick Crawford, a member of the Buffalo Soldiers, 9th and 10th Cavalry Association, discusses how these men served in the harshest conditions and with great distinction, displaying valor in every theater and earning 14 Medals of Honor during the Indian Wars. May 15, Virginia. Director’s Guided Battlefield Tour

Explore the battlefield with Civil War historian and Site Director, Lt. Col. Troy D. Marshall of the Virginia Museum of the Civil War who will explain the action as it took place exactly 153 years ago. Hear accounts of the battle in the words of the soldiers who were there. The tour includes a visit to the Bushong home, the movie “Field of Lost Shoes” and the “Bloody Cedars.” The tour will last from 2-4 p.m. You may bring a camp chair if you like. Participants receive a complimentary bottle of water and light refreshments. Tour will include walking on the New Market Battlefield State Historical Park and driving personal vehicles to the nearby Days Inn parking lot. This event is limited to 50 participants. The North-South Skirmish Association 137th National Competition near Winchester. Over 3,000 uniformed competitors in 200 member units compete in live-fire matches with muskets, carbines, revolvers, mortars and cannon plus costume competitions and historical lectures. Come and join us for the 154th Anniversary Battle of New Market Reenactment held on our original battlefield property. One of the oldest continual reenactments in the nation. June 1-3, New Jersey. Living History and Skirmish.

Crossroads to Gettysburg Living History and Skirmish will be held at the Historic Village of Allaire at the Allaire State Park, Farmingdale, N.J. Hosted by the N.J. Civil War Heritage Association. The troops follow the trek across the Mason-Dixon Line prior to the Battle of Gettysburg. The Union regiments that are being portraying are the 14th Brooklyn (84th NYSV), 20th NYSM (80th NYSV), 124th NYSV, 147th NYSV, 7th NJV, 12th NJV, 13th NJV, 14th NJV, 20th ME & 142nd PVI. The Confederate side will represented by the 5th Alabama Battalion, led by Chris Anders. Susanna Kocher Vaughan is serving as the civilian coordinator. June 2-3. Pennsylvania. Living History

Reenactors and living historians are invited to participate in Historic Pennypacker Mills’ annual 2-day Civil War event located at 5 Hadleman Road, Schwenksville, Pa. Step back in time with our annual lantern tour program, “Spirits of New Market,” as we celebrate the indomitable spirit of those whose lives were impacted by the Battle of New Market. You’ll follow your guide on a lantern-lit, seven station tour of the Battlefield encountering living historians portraying the soldiers, townsfolk, and Bushong family. While interacting with the characters, you’ll be able to lend aid to the wounded, ask questions and experience the Battlefield in a whole new way. $10 per adult, ages 13 and older. $5 for ages 6-12, children 5 and under are free.
