The National Civil War Museum offers the first in its 2018 series of 12 free lectures to the public with “New Acquisitions and Seldom Seen Treasures of the Museum” with NCWM Curator Brett Kelley. This presentation will include a display of the NCWM’s newest donations and additions to the Museum collection. The 2018 Lessons in History program is open from 1-2 pm and is free to the public. Jan. 28, Pennsylvania. Free Civil War Dance Class

Conducted by the Victorian Dance Ensemble, the performing troupe of the Civil War Dance Foundation, at Penn State Harrisburg Campus, Middletown, PA. Get ready for the Civil War Preservation Ball. Learn the popular formation dances of the 1860s. Partners are encouraged but not required. Ideal for teachers, reenactors, historic site docents. The Battle at Townsend’s Plantation is sponsored by the law offices of Clay Townsend, Esq. and hosted by the 37th Alabama Co. H. Located at 20651 U.S. Hwy. 441, Mt. Dora, FL 32757. Be here for the 32nd Annual Fort Taylor Civil War Heritage Days on Feb. 2-4, in Key West. This 3-day event portrays the time period of 1861-1862 at a Federal fortress. Feb. 16-18, Florida. Reenactment

Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park will host the weekend long 42nd Annual Reenactment commemorating the 154th anniversary of the Battle of Olustee. More than 2,000 living historians will give presentations of both civilian and military life during the Civil War. Events will include a wreath laying ceremony, Civil War Memorial Service, tours and medical demonstrations, entertainment, arts, crafts and food booths along with artillery night firing and old-fashioned barn dance. Spectators can visit authentic campsites, watch the parade, view artillery inspections, listen to a period music concert and watch the battle reenactment. Mississippi Stands Civil War Reenactment Battle of Brice’s Crossroads The 1st Division/Southern Reenactors Association is pleased to announce the following national event, Mississippi Stands Civil War Reenactment. This is an event that will feature some of the vital Historic Battles for the control of Mississippi and border states. Battles will take place on nearly 2,000 acres of Historic Battlefield located at Brice’s Crossroads in Baldwyn. All reenactors and organizations are invited to attend this historic event. There will be both campaign style battles along with spectator battles along with mainstream, campaign and civilian camps for everyone. For information; 662-680-4025.

Feb. 23-25, Florida. Reenactment

Battle of Ballast Point at Ft. Desoto hosted by the 97th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry, in cooperation with Pinellas County Parks Dept. and Ft. Desoto Park will host a Civil War weekend encampment and historic battle reenactment located at 3500 Pinellas Bayway S. St. Petersburg, FL 33715. Participants will include Union and Confederate infantry, artillery and civilian impressions. On Friday, camps will be open for tours by elementary school students from surrounding counties. Sat. and Sun. camps will be open to the public from 9 am – 5 pm with ongoing events each day. Battle reenactments at 2 pm on Sat. and 1 pm on Sun. Feb. 24, Maryland. Slavery and Catholic America in the 19th Century

“Catholicism was deeply entwined with slavery in the colonial Chesapeake and evolved with the changing nature of American society in the 19th century.” Professor Adam Rothman of Georgetown University traces the history of the Maryland Jesuit slave community, whose legacy is still felt today. The National Civil War continues its 2018 Lessons in History Speaking Series as NCWM CEO Wayne Motts presents “The Wounded Soon Began To Pour In…: The George Spangler Farm and the Union 11th Corps Hospital at Gettysburg.” Wayne Motts will take you back 155 years to the scene of Gettysburg’s best preserved and documented field hospital. His presentation will include unpublished, rare, and seldom scene material associated with the farm and its history. Sat., 1-2 pm Free to the public. Feb. 24-25, South Carolina. Reenactment

See history come alive with cannons, cavalry horses and living history experts. Over the weekend, reenactors eat, sleep, live and fight in a painfully recreated version of the war in 1865. This reenactment has grown from a few hundred men with muskets to a full-blown Civil War festival. In addition to the battles, there will be authentic 19th century military encampments, living history presentations, reproductions of medical facilities, signal service and civilian portrayals. Nineteenth Annual Lincoln Assassination Studies. Current researchers and authors in the field share thoughts on how a divided nation dealt with the death of Lincoln, how John Surratt interacted with female agents for the Confederacy, the ongoing stories of Dr. Mudd, the illegalities of the Conspiracy Trial, a CSI: Washington investigation of how the evidence was handled, and more. Shenandoah University’s McCormick Civil War Institute annual spring conference (8:30 am– 4 pm) “Another Era in Our War Life”: When the Home Front Became the Battle Front. April 20-22, Florida. Living History

Located at Camp Milton Historic Preserve, 1175 Halsema Road North in Jacksonville and hosted by the city of Jacksonville – JAXParks. C.S. & U.S. Soldiers are needed to participate. Confederate soldiers will camp and defend the reconstructed earthworks, originally constructed in March of 1864. Federal soldiers will recreate the June 1864 attack on the works. Sat. skirmish at 2 pm, Sun. skirmish at 1 pm The Preserve is located on the northern portion of the original battlefield. The civilian camp is located at the interpretive center, AKA “the barn.” Members of the Golden Teacup Society will portray the lives of civilians affected by the war in and around Jacksonville.
