TO THE EDITOR: Thank you so much for the great article “Ed Bearss Chooses His Favorite Civil War Books” in the November Civil War News Book Issue. I had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Bearss and he is the nicest man I have ever met. At the Vicksburg National Military Park during a Civil War reenactment, he gave me valuable information about my Union Army ancestor, John Sperry, 131st Illinois Infantry, during Grant’s siege of Vicksburg. He directed me to a map of Young’s Pont, La., where my ancestor died of dysentery on Feb. 15, 1863. Tom Yokey TO THE EDITOR: In the November 2018 issue, I enjoyed reading the Emerging Civil War Series article by Chris Mackowski. To date, I have read three books from this series. I am a long time history buff and have been pleased with the content of these books. They are very informative and offer much information about battles that readers might not otherwise be aware of, including maps and photographs of the battle sites. After reading the first book in the series, I just knew that I would want to read more. I am currently working on obtaining the whole series of these amazing books. I tell anyone interested in learning about the Civil War that this series should be on the top of their reading list. Barbara and I enjoyed the visit with you and Peggy and hope we will have a chance to reciprocate. I noticed with special interest the annual book issue featuring Ed Bearss favorite Civil War Books. Dorothy Partridge, one of Ed’s greatest admirers, did a fine job with the article. Thanks again and love to Peggy. Hope to see you again soon.
