Battlefield Recovers from Hurricane

NEW BERN, N.C.—Hurricane Florence battered New Bern in September and while a large tree hit the roof of the Visitors Center and dozens of trees were down on the battlefield most of the walking trails remain open at this time. Visitors should use caution. Jon Miller, Battlefield Manager, also added, “Our volunteers are working hard with chain saws and rakes.” Readers may recall Ambrose Burnside’s seizure of coastal New Bern in Spring 1862, which he claimed at a cost of 471 Federal casualties while inflicting 578 on its defenders as well as taking 66 big guns, 1,000 stands of arms, and supplies. New Bern Battlefield Site is a historic site of the Civil War Battle of New Bern located near New Bern, Craven County, N.C. The battle was fought on March 14, 1862. The New Bern Battlefield consists of two discontiguous sites. It was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The New Bern Historical Society owns about 27 acres of the battlefield site and protects it as New Bern Battlefield Park. For information go to www. newbernhistorical.org.
