Antietam Seeking Information And Support For 150th Anniversary Of The National Cemetery

SHARPSBURG, MD.—September 17, 2017 marks the 150th Anniversary of the dedication of the Antietam National Cemetery in Sharpsburg, Md. Throughout the year, the park plans to remember and honor those buried in the cemetery through a series of special talks and events. We would like to invite anyone who has stories, photos or documents of soldiers in the cemetery to share copies of them with us. We will use the information we collect in displays and exhibits for the 150th Anniversary commemoration. The Antietam National Cemetery was dedicated in 1867. Approximately 5,000 service members from the Civil War, Spanish American War, World War I, World War II, and the Korean War are buried here, including many soldiers from the local area. The park will gratefully accept information about any veteran buried in the cemetery. On Sept. 17 we will read the names of every person buried in the National Cemetery. The reading of the names is open to the public.
