Beauvoir and the New Orleans Monuments BILOXI, Miss., June 13, 2017— Beauvoir, the Jefferson Davis Presidential Library and Home, has reached out to the City of New Orleans in an effort to obtain the statue(s) removed from the city’s downtown, but so far, we have gotten no response from Mayor Mitch Landrieu’s office. Beauvoir’s Executive Director, Dr. Tom Payne noted that. “Our interest, on a scale of 1-10, is about a 12.” Beauvoir is exploring how we can bring the monuments to our property. Our vision is to include the monuments as part of our historical narrative at Beauvoir. Our core mission is to educate and commemorate the ideals of our heritage as Americans and particularly as Southern Americans. We have a rich history which encompasses much more than the events of the Civil War, but the War accentuated the character and integrity of the South. The negative narrative on monuments related to the Southern Cause indicates a vast lack of knowledge on the part of many about the issues and consequences of the Civil War. The misinformation and myths have been perpetuated by special interest groups and the mainstream media. At Beauvoir we feel a sacred calling to refute and rebut this attack with facts. In our effort to prioritize education, we created the Beauvoir Institute of Southern Heritage. By initiating the Institute, we hope to heal wounds caused by factionalism, not to defend a position, but to more clearly explain the true feeling of the South and focus of our determination. The Institute of Southern Heritage will be the place to find accurate primary sourced material that we hope will share the light of history and remove the heat of emotion.
