East Meets West Event Labor Day Weekend

Labor Day Weekend GETTYSBURG, Pa.—This Labor Day weekend, a very unique event is coming to the Gettysburg area. Unusual, as it does not focus on the Battle of Gettysburg, “East Meets West at Gettysburg,” will examine both theaters of America’s Civil War. Living History presenters will portray a wide variety of Generals including Grant, Lee, Sherman, Armistead, Forrest, Johnson, Ewell, McPherson, Grierson and many others, along with soldiers like Albert Cashier, who was really “Jennie Hodgers.” Jim Bordwine from the Mountain Men TV series will be on hand to demonstrate saltmaking. There’ll be other demonstrations from the era such as blacksmithing. Household chores done in the style of the 1860’s will also be shown. Visitors may speak with the Living History Presenters at their locations around the Farm’s house and barns. There will also be a speaker’s tent where the focus will be on contrasting both theaters of the Civil War. The hours are 10 a.m. until 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, September 3rd and 4th. A rededication of the Illinois State Monuments on the Gettysburg National Military Park will also take place at the 8th Illinois Cavalry monument on Reynolds Avenue. That will be at 5 p.m., Saturday, September 3rd. The event is presented by the Illiana Civil War Historical Society and the Ward Hill Lamon Civil War Roundtable.
