Nov. 3-6, Virginia. Grant Forrest’s West Tennessee Raid and the Holly Springs Raid

When Halleck was brought to Washington, U.S. Grant assumed command of operations along the Mississippi River. Having won fights at Iuka, Corinth and Davis Bridge and with Memphis as a base of supply, Grant began to plan operations to open the river to commerce. Disregarding Halleck’s warnings about his supply lines, Grant advanced to Oxford, Mississippi and brought supply trains past Grand Junction and into Holly Springs. After releasing Sherman to move towards Vicksburg, Grant prepared to move along the Mississippi Central Railroad. Grant would never make it–Nathan Bedford Forrest and Earl Van Dorn would make sure of that.
