24 Tom’s Brook Acres Saved The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation (SVBF) purchased 24 acres, shown in yellow, at the core of Tom’s Brook Battlefield in Shenandoah County thanks to donations and a bridge loan from Nicholas and Kathy Picerno. The $50,000 property, which was subdivided into eight residential lots, brings total land protected at Tom’s Brook by the SVBF to 575 acres. On Oct. 9, 1864, Gen. George A. Custer’s cavalry attacked Confederate cavalry at Tom’s Brook, flanking and routing the outnumbered force in what became known as the “Woodstock Races.” It was the largest cavalry battle ever fought in the Valley.
