Controlled Burn At Gettysburg
By Leon Reed · Originally published June 2016 · p. 8

GETTYSBURG, Pa.—On April 18, Gettysburg park staff conducted a controlled burn on 36 acres at Lee’s Headquarters near Wheatfield Road and Sedgwick Avenue just north of Little Round Top. The area of the burn was just south of an area burned by the National Park Service last summer and is part of an effort to maintain wildlife habitat, control invasive species, reduce shrub growth and fire hazard, and to restore the 1863 appearance of this part of the battlefield. The prescribed burn successfully met the objectives. Ghostly photo of the smoke above the battlefield. (Leon Reed)
