Civil War Round Table Of Atlanta Presents Their 2015 Richard Barksdale Harwell Award

ATLANTA, Ga.—The Civil War Round Table of Atlanta has presented Dr. Timothy B. Smith of the University of Tennessee at Martin with the 2015 Richard Barksdale Harwell Award for his book Shiloh: Conquer or Perish (University Press of Kansas, 2014).

The prestigious award, which includes a monetary prize and an engraved plaque, is presented annually for the best book on a Civil War subject published in the preceding year. Dr. Smith has also authored or edited fifteen additional books on the Civil War in the Western Theater, with two others in progress including a study of the 1862 Campaign for Forts Henry and Donelson. As part of the award, Smith addressed the monthly meeting of the Atlanta Round Table on June 14, 2016, with a program entitled “Difficult and Broken Ground: The Terrain Factor at Shiloh.” The Harwell Award honors the late Richard Barksdale Harwell, nationally recognized librarian, bibliographer and historian, as well as the first President of the Civil War Round Table of Atlanta. While any book on the subject of the Civil War may qualify for consideration, entries are judged by the Harwell Award Committee on a variety of factors including originality of subject or treatment, historical accuracy, effectiveness of presentation, and the extent of contribution to Civil War literature.
