County Board Approves Wal-mart Special Permit At Wilderness

ORANGE, Va. – Just before 1 a.m. on Aug. 25, after a grueling seven-hour meeting, the Orange County Board of Supervisors (BOS) by a 4-1 vote gave final approval for the special use permit Wal-mart needed to build its 138,000-square-foot “supercenter” at the entrance to the Wilderness Battlefield.

MIDDLETOWN, Va. — Time has a way of mollifying things. At least, Suzanne Chilson hopes they do. Chilson, who has been Executive Director of Cedar Creek Battlefield Foundation (CCBF) since 1996, says she has “never seen a year last one,” meaning 2008.
Artifacts Found At Franklin’s Battle Park

FRANKLIN, Tenn. — Thanks to discoveries after metal detector surveying of former golf course sand traps on the Eastern Flank of the Franklin Battlefield, a Franklin City Alderman wants to require such surveys of any historical land before it is developed.
Major Exhibit To Open On Lincoln & New York City
NEW YORK — The New-York Historical Society will present a major exhibition, “Lincoln and New York,” Oct. 9 to March 26. This first in-depth look at Lincoln’s connection to the city is the society’s final Lincoln Year celebration.
Va. Historical Society To Host John Brown Exhibition
RICHMOND, Va. — As a major part of the national recognition of the 150th anniversary of John Brown’s October 1859 raid on the Federal Armory at Harpers Ferry, the Virginia Historical Society (VHS) will open the exhibition “The Portent: John Brown’s Raid in American Memory” on Oct. 10. It is the first major exhibition on the subject by a Southern institution.
