WASHINGTON, D.C. — A gala dinner will be held Nov. 4 at Washington’s Willard Intercontinental Hotel to raise funds for the 2011 commemoration of President Abraham Lincoln’s Grand Review of the Army of the Potomac.

Lincoln’s Nov. 20, 1861, journey to Virginia will be commemorated by the Lincoln at the Crossroads Alliance. The group plans to present a reenactment of the Grand Review on Nov. 12, 2011, to commemorate its 150th anniversary.

In addition, sculptor Ron Tunison has been commissioned to create a statue of Lincoln and a bas-relief of the Grand Review. All dinner proceeds will go towards this part of the commemoration.

According to president Maria Elena Schacknies, the Alliance believes that such reenactments and memorials will play a vital role in creating a sense of place and history for those living and working in the Bailey’s Crossroads area of Virginia, site of the Grand Review.

The dinner will feature a period meal, based on one that was served to Lincoln on Feb. 19, 1861, addresses by noted historians and a silent auction.  The date of the dinner, Nov. 4, is the wedding anniversary of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln.
